Five Star Movement, 2024 European Elections: Candidates, Lists, and Election Polls

M5S Candidates for the 2024 European Elections

The 5 Star Movement is gearing up for the 2024 European elections, with polling stations in Italy set to open on Saturday, June 8th and Sunday, June 9th simultaneously with the first round of local and regional elections in Piedmont.

Candidates Selection Process

The 5 Star Movement has defined its lists through three rounds of voting, including three outgoing MEPs and some prominent figures suggested by Giuseppe Conte in each of the five constituencies.
Despite Giuseppe Conte announcing that he will not run for the 2024 European elections, names like Pasquale Tridico and Carolina Morace stand out among those proposed by him.

Electoral Law and Projections

The Italian electoral law for European elections does not allow for coalitions.
Parties and movements can, however, join forces in a single list.
Italy will elect 73 MEPs, proportionally distributed among those who manage to surpass a 4% threshold nationally.
The country is divided into five constituencies (North-West, North-East, Center, South, and Islands), with voters able to cast up to three preferences for candidates.

Challenges for Candidates

Securing a seat in the European Parliament won’t be easy, with each candidate estimated to spend between €50,000 and €200,000 on their electoral campaigns.
Giuseppe Conte has made it clear that he will not be part of the race, leaving the 5 Star Movement to select its candidates through a series of votes.

Overview of Candidates

Apart from outgoing MEPs Maria Angela Danzì, Mario Furore, and Sabrina Pignedoli, candidates proposed directly by the former Prime Minister have been integrated into the lists.
These include renowned figures such as Pasquale Tridico for the South, Carolina Morace for the Center, and others spread across different constituencies.

Recent Polls

Recent polls indicate that the 5 Star Movement is projected to secure around 16 seats out of the total 73 allotted to Italy in the European Parliament.
Various polling agencies have placed the movement between 15% and 17% in voting intentions.
If these projections hold true, the 5 Star Movement is likely to have a significant presence in the upcoming European Parliament.
