Pensions, fourteenth surprise in December. Who deserves it and cares
We have already had the opportunity to talk about the reasons why the December pension will have a very high amount for the majority of pensioners: in fact, in addition to the payment of the thirteenth salary and the related bonus of around 154 euros (for those who satisfy the conditions), the balance of the 2023 revaluation.
However, we did not focus on the fourth reason which could ensure a further increase in pension: the new payment of the fourteenth month 2023 for those who have not yet benefited from it.
The fourteenth on the pension, the amount of which unlike that of the thirteenth is not subject to annual revaluation, is usually paid in July, however there are pensioners who have been excluded because they had not yet satisfied the required age requirement, equal to 64 years of age.
However, where the age of 64 has been reached in the meantime, as well as for those who only subsequently acquired the right to a pension, the INPS intervenes with a new payment of the thirteenth salary which is scheduled with the December payslip.
What is the fourteenth of the pension? The fourteenth of the pension, also called additional sum for the year 2023, is a social increase in social security payments only (it is not payable to holders of a social allowance or civil disability pension) recognized by the article 5, paragraphs 1 to 4, of legislative decree no.
81 of 2 July 2007, converted with amendments into law no.
127 of 3 August 2007, as amended by law no.
232 of 11 December 2016.
In detail, it is up to: holders of one or more pensions paid by the compulsory general insurance and the replacement, exclusive and exempt forms of the same, managed by public compulsory social security bodies; at least 64 years of age; with a total income of up to twice the minimum annual payment of the Employee Fund, equal to 7,328.62 euros in 2023.
Who receives it in December For those who complete the requirements by 31 July of the reference year, the benefit is paid on the July pension installment.
It is paid in December for those who between August 1st and December 31st: turn 64; they become pensioners (subject to the age requirement of 64 years of age).
Added to the thirteenth, to the 154 euro bonus and to the balance of the revaluation is also the additional sum for those who only became pensioners after July or have reached the age of 64.
How much you are entitled to There are various factors that can affect the calculation of the fourteenth salary.
In detail, the value varies: based on personal income.
Those with an income lower than 1.5 times the minimum payment – therefore 10,992.93 euros this year – will be entitled to a greater amount than those who are in the range between 1.5 and 2 times the minimum payment: a depending on the management to which they belong, i.e.
whether employed or self-employed workers; based on the number of contributions accrued.
In 2023 the amounts of the fourteenth pension for those who have an income lower than 1.5 times the minimum salary, therefore up to 10,992.93 euros, amount to: Employees Self-employed workers Fourteenth amount up to 15 years of contributions up to 18 years of contributions 437.00 euros between 15 and 25 years of contributions between 18 and 28 years of contributions 546.00 euros over 25 years of contributions over 28 years of contributions 655.00 euros Above 10,992.93 euros, but still within 14,657.24 euros, the fourteenth is due for a lower amount.
In detail, the table is as follows: Employed workersSelf-employed workersFourteenth amount up to 15 years of contributions up to 18 years 336.00 euros between 15 and 25 years of contributions between 18 and 28 years of contributions 420.00 euros over 25 years of contributions over 28 years of contributions 504.00 euros We remind you that once the threshold is exceeded the increase is still due, but in a partial amount: the fourteenth, in fact, is paid up to the aforementioned income limit increased by the additional sum hypothetically due.
For example, a pensioner with 25 years of contributions, a former employee, with an income of 14,800 euros, will still be entitled to a fourteenth of 361.24 euros despite having an income higher than the aforementioned threshold.
Here is a table that summarizes the rules for calculating the partial amount.
Employees, self-employed workers.
Income between Formula for calculating the fourteenth month's salary up to 15 years of contributions up to 18 years of contributions From 14,657.24 euros to 14,993.24 euros (14,993.24 – Personal income) between 15 and 25 years of contributions between 18 and 28 years of contributions From 14,657.24 euros to 15,077.24 euros (15,077.24 – Personal income) over 25 years of contributions over 28 years of contributions From 14,657.24 euros to 15,161.24 euros (15,161.24 – Personal income) But be careful: for those who have completed the requirements during the year the amount is re-measured based on the number of months in which these are satisfied.
For example, the pensioner who turned 64 in September 2023 will only receive 4 fourteenth installments.
To understand how much you are entitled to, therefore, you need to take the expected amount based on your membership management and accrued contributions, divide it by 12 and finally multiply it by the months in which the requirements are met.
