Beware of Beach Bugs: What Are They and Can They Bite?
Pulci di Mare: Gli Insetti Fastidiosi delle Spiagge
With summer comes the desire not only to travel, but to relax on the beach and immerse oneself in the sea waters in search of relaxation.
However, it is a pity that due to small insects, there is a risk of returning home with itchy welts and skin irritations.
This is the effect of sea fleas, small “creatures” that can bite beachgoers, causing considerable discomfort and ruining the plans for “absolute relaxation and rest”.
What Are Sea Fleas and Why Do They Bite?
“Sea fleas” are small crustaceans that live on the shore and in water, carried by marine currents.
Their presence is sometimes unpredictable: one day they may not be there, and the next day they can invade the waters and then disappear again.
Measuring less than a centimeter, it is very difficult to spot their presence in our seas ahead of time.
Despite being annoying parasites, sea fleas are not dangerous and are present throughout the Mediterranean, including our beaches – particularly active at sunrise or sunset.
According to marine biologists, the presence of sea fleas is not related to the cleanliness of the beaches.
These tiny crustaceans have very rapid reproduction cycles, so they can suddenly invade beaches overnight.
Sea fleas are actually parasites of fish and feed primarily on their blood, hence the name “sea flea”.
They have tiny spines to attach themselves to their fish and also use them to sting beachgoers, causing irritation and welts.
Dealing with Sea Flea Bites
Due to their small spines, sea flea bites can cause urticating reactions, with the appearance of erythematous papules and itching that can last from a few hours to several days.
If bitten, it is important to wash the area with seawater immediately and then disinfect it with an antiseptic soap and cold water.
Thorough washing is crucial, as these crustaceans can cling to the skin or swimsuit.
Apply a soothing cream containing calamine or plant extracts like peppermint and Aloe.
To reduce skin lesions, a cortisone cream can also be applied.
Although not dangerous, some hypersensitive individuals may experience persistent and particularly annoying itching for days.
In such cases, consider a treatment with oral antihistamines after consulting a doctor.
Preventing Sea Flea Bites
Before arming yourself with the necessary creams to treat sea flea bites, it is important to know how to prevent being bitten.
Experts recommend using repellent sprays based on essential oils that should be applied to the skin before going to the beach and after each swim in the sea.
