Elections in Bergamo 2024: What to Expect

As the administrative elections in Bergamo 2024 approach, preparations are in full swing for the primaries which will be combined with the European elections, reminiscent of the election day that took place five years ago.

Notably absent from the administrative elections Bergamo 2024 will be Giorgio Gori, the current mayor from the Democratic Party, who is nearing the end of his second consecutive term at Palazzo Frizzoni and has chosen to run for the European elections.

The Candidates

There will be a total of three candidates vying for the elections in Bergamo.
The Democratic Party has nominated former deputy Elena Carnevali as their mayoral candidate.
The 5 Star Movement will run independently, supporting Vittorio Apicella, while the center-right has chosen to back Andrea Pezzotta.

Key Dates and Voting Information

The administrative elections Bergamo 2024 are scheduled for Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9 for the first round.
The polling stations will be open from 15:00 to 23:00 on Saturday and from 7:00 to 23:00 on Sunday.

The counting of votes for the first round will commence on Monday, June 10, at 14:00.
In the event of a runoff, it will take place on Sunday, June 23, and Monday, June 24.

How to Vote in Bergamo Elections

During the Bergamo administrative elections, voters have three options: mark an X on the party symbol, giving the vote to the mayoral candidate; mark an X only on the name of the mayoral candidate; mark an X on the party and write the surname of the preferred council candidate.

Split voting is allowed, where voters can select a mayoral candidate and support a different party.
In municipalities with over 15,000 inhabitants, voters can also give dual gender preferences.

Electoral Law

The electoral law for administrative elections in Italy uses a majority system for mayor elections and a proportional system for councilors.
In Bergamo, if no candidate secures an absolute majority in the first round, a runoff between the top two candidates will be held.

To ensure a stable majority, the winning mayoral candidate’s coalition will be awarded 60% of the seats.
The remaining seats will be distributed proportionally using the D’Hondt method.
