The obsession with video games among teenagers can indeed have serious repercussions, as demonstrated by a shocking incident involving a family in China.
A 13-year-old girl completely drained a bank account of 60,000 euros, spending recklessly on new games and in-game features through her mobile phone.
Unbeknownst to her, she obliterated years of family savings.
This alarming case triggered a heated discussion on social media platforms.
Some users criticized the young girl, claiming she was fully aware of her actions yet chose not to stop.
Others, however, pointed the finger at her parents, suggesting they should have monitored their daughter’s spending habits more closely, particularly regarding her use of money.
The startling revelation about the 60,000 euros spent on video games came to light when the girl’s teacher reached out to her parents, worried about the excessive time she spent gaming on her phone.
Fearing the onset of a severe addiction, the alarm was raised.
Suspicious of her daughter’s behavior, the mother decided to check the family’s bank accounts.
To her astonishment, she discovered that the account balance had plummeted to merely 0.5 yuan, approximately six cents, from what was once a life’s savings.
Confronted by her parents, the girl confessed to spending over 15,000 euros on video game purchases and an astonishing additional 27,152 euros on microtransactions for exclusive in-game features.
Furthermore, she admitted to spending thousands more on games meant for at least ten of her classmates.
Her fears of ridicule from peers if she declined to buy games, compounded by peer pressure, led her to overspend dramatically, all without fully grasping the consequences of her actions.
The method the young girl used to tap into the family’s funds was surprisingly straightforward.
She found her mother’s debit card at home and linked it to her mobile device.
Additionally, since her mother had previously provided her with the card’s password for emergencies, she gained unwarranted access to the family’s bank account.
To obscure her spending, the girl regularly deleted transaction records, successfully keeping her activities hidden for several months.
Upon discovering the account was nearly empty, the mother attempted to recover the lost funds by reaching out to the companies involved in the transactions.
However, to date, she has not managed to reclaim the full amount.
This situation raises critical questions about the responsibility that video game companies have towards their consumers, particularly minors, and the refund policies in scenarios like this one.
