Schools Closed on Mondays When Tuesdays Are Holidays: Here’s Where

Schools Closed on Mondays if Tuesday is a Holiday

The school calendar of certain institutions in Italy may undergo modifications, particularly in the context of the upcoming long weekend for All Saints’ Day, a national holiday celebrated on the first of November, which this year falls on a Friday.
This change is also influenced by a teachers’ strike scheduled for Thursday, October 31.

This new rule regarding automatic Monday closures if the following Tuesday is a holiday potentially affects around 75,000 students in Italy, especially those located in South Tyrol, in the autonomous province of Bolzano.
Historically, this province enjoys greater autonomy in its educational decisions compared to other regions, and the proposed change will likely be ratified by the Consortium of Municipalities.

Holiday Impact in South Tyrol: When Does This Apply?

The holiday on Tuesday triggers an automatic day off on the preceding Monday, merging this day with the weekend.
This proposal aims to benefit South Tyrolean teachers and students by potentially being implemented starting this Christmas break, to avoid disrupting the ongoing classes for those who consciously choose not to attend.
Allowing school on the day before a holiday could lead to increased absences as students opt for an extended vacation.

Currently, throughout Italy, regions and individual schools have full autonomy to decide if they will close for a long weekend when a holiday falls on a Friday or Saturday for schools operating six days a week.
Should the proposal be enacted, there will be automatic observance of Monday holidays for students and teachers in South Tyrol.

Specifically, the first automatic holiday would fall on Monday, December 23, 2024, as December 24 is a holiday in schools, already established in the provincial school calendar.
This measure will aim to formalize the practice of providing a Monday off when the upcoming Tuesday is a holiday, something that will also apply in 2026 when June 2, Republic Day, occurs on a Tuesday.

Distinct School Calendar in Bolzano

It’s worth noting the autonomous province of Bolzano operates on a different school calendar than the rest of Italy, starting the academic year earlier in September and extending it at least a week longer into June.
This difference allows for more breaks throughout the year, including extended closures during Carnival and October.
For instance, in 2024, schools will be closed from Saturday, October 26, to Sunday, November 3.

Looking ahead, the first major long weekend for all Italian schools will be on Friday, November 1, with the following holiday on December 8 falling on a Sunday.

For 2025, additional long weekends are expected, such as Friday, April 25, Liberation Day, coinciding with the Easter holidays, and the following Monday, June 2, aligning with the weekend.

Ultimately, it is up to individual schools and regions to decide whether to extend holidays based on their approved calendars, as seen in regions like Marche or Campania.
