Trump-Harris Debate: What Was Said?

Last night, the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia hosted the first televised debate between presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris for the 2024 U.S.
elections.
This follows a previous “showdown” back in June when Joe Biden was still in the race.
The underwhelming performance of the sitting president initiated significant changes within the Democratic party.

However, in Philadelphia, the atmosphere felt entirely different.
Trump and Harris shook hands before the debate broadcast by ABC News, delivering responses to questions posed by moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis for a full 90 minutes under strict rules.
Candidates’ microphones were muted during their opponents’ speaking time, and they were forbidden from using pre-written notes.

Who Came Out on Top?

The debate was intense at times, but as the broadcast concluded, it seemed the Democrats were pleased with Harris’s performance.

Trump expressed satisfaction with the debate, though he is unlikely to agree to another, claiming he felt outnumbered by the moderators: “It was three against one.” Despite polls suggesting he still holds a slight lead, engaging in televised debates can often turn unfavorable for frontrunners.

Kamala Harris felt equally confident, attempting to temper her supporters’ excitement by stating, “This race is a close one.” She received notable backing from pop star Taylor Swift, which is a significant endorsement for any candidate.

Fact-Checking the Debate

During the debate, major issues like abortion, immigration, and foreign policy took center stage.
According to NBC’s fact-checking analysis, several inaccuracies arose throughout the discussion, particularly from Trump, who was corrected twice by the moderators.

Trump made the claim about Harris: “Her father is a Marxist economics professor, which influenced her vastly,” a statement unsupported by various former students.
He also misstated the value of military equipment left behind in Afghanistan, asserting it was $85 billion, whereas Pentagon reports indicate it was just above $7 billion.

Further, Trump incorrectly suggested that Harris’s objective was to seize firearms, while she only called for stricter regulations.
In contrast, Harris’s claim that “No U.S.
service member is currently in active combat zones for the first time this century” was misleading, as American troops are indeed stationed in Syria, Somalia, and Iraq.

Regarding fossil fuels, Trump warned that “if Biden wins again, we will revert to windmills and solar energy, which need whole deserts to function.” However, under Biden’s leadership, oil and gas production has peaked, making the U.S.
a leading oil producer globally.

On the topic of abortion, Trump said Harris supported late-term abortions and post-birth executions, which was a misrepresentation as no significant Democratic figures have advocated for such extremes.
He also falsely claimed that immigrants “eat our dogs and cats,” a narrative corrected by the moderators, stemming from unfounded rumors.

Lastly, Trump’s remark on inflation suggested it was the worst in American history, while historical data shows similar peaks during his own administration in 2018.

Overall, the debate was marked by numerous inaccuracies, especially from Trump, with Harris appearing to have made fewer misstatements.
