Rare $2 Coin Valued at $1,000 – Half a Million in Circulation
The Value of Rare Australian $2 Coins
If you are a traveler and have visited Australia in recent years, it’s time to check if you have a particular rare $2 coin.
Its value goes well beyond the face value.
The Story Behind the Red Poppy $2 Coin
Numismatic enthusiast Michael McCauley brought to light the significant value of the 2012 Red Poppy $2 coins.
These colorful coins were minted to commemorate Remembrance Day and feature the image of a red poppy surrounded by the words “Lest We Forget” and “Remembrance Day.”
The Royal Mint only produced 503,000 of these coins, making it one of the lowest mintages for $2 colored coins in Australian history.
The Rarity and Value
“Do not spend these coins,” McCauley advised on TikTok, explaining that they can be worth between $240 and $500 based on recent selling prices.
However, there are even rarer versions with significantly higher values.
If the coin bears the mintmark ‘C’ above, its value ranges from $530 to $1,150 for a 2012 Red Poppy coin, according to the expert.
Only 40,902 $2 coins with the ‘C’ mintmark were produced by the Royal Mint for Remembrance Day, making this variant even rarer.
Special Editions and Increased Demand
In 2022, the Australian Mint issued a special edition for the tenth anniversary of the 2012 Red Poppy $2 coin, which is now valued well above its face value.
The release caused such a surge in demand that it crashed the Mint’s website, showcasing the enduring interest in these unique collectibles.
