Google: Antitrust Issues and Refunds for Consumers

Google, the web giant, has faced accusations of unfair practices and abuse of power due to its dominant position in the internet industry.
The company has been fined hefty amounts in Europe and the United States for anticompetitive behaviors in the past.
Notably, four years ago, it was sued by the U.S.
Department of Justice for abusing its power regarding consumer access to apps on mobile devices using its Android operating system.

In 2021, Epic Games, a video game company, also filed a lawsuit against Google for similar reasons.
The tech giant from Mountain View was criticized for requiring game developers to use its proprietary payment system for apps downloaded from the Play Store, essentially forcing developers to pay a commission to Google ranging from 15 to 30 percent on all transactions.

In 2023, a jury ruled that Google had violated U.S.
antitrust laws.
As a result, Google adjusted its policies by lowering the commission rates on transactions from 15-30% to 11-26%.
Moreover, Google committed to displaying different pricing options on the Play Store, allowing consumers to choose how to pay for a product: either directly to the developer (who would receive the full amount without any commissions) or through Google’s billing system (with the company deducting a fee).
Additionally, developers can now show different prices for their products within the app without needing Google’s authorization.

Due to its behavior, Google was fined $630 million, with the judges ruling that this amount should be distributed to affected consumers, along with an additional $70 million to be allocated to a fund for the States.
The $630 million will be given to consumers who fell victim to Google’s misconduct.
Let’s explore who is eligible for a refund, how much they can expect, and how to claim it.

Who Is Eligible for a Refund from Google and How Much

Consumers who made purchases on the Play Store between August 16, 2016, and September 30, 2023, are entitled to a refund from Google.
According to the legal agreement, they will receive a minimum of $2, but the amount could be higher.
If you are an Android device user, you may be eligible for a refund.
Claiming it requires no action on your part, as the process is automatic.
Eligible customers will be promptly informed about the available options to receive their money, likely through a refund on the Play Store or the card used for the transaction.
