2024 US primary elections: the long and complex process through which both the Republican Party and the Democratic Party will choose their candidate – or candidate – for the White House is about to begin.
As per tradition – in fact it is not an obligation provided for in the Constitution – the two American parties will identify their candidate for president through the primary mechanism which in the United States will last a good five months.
As usual, the 2024 primaries will be inaugurated by the caucuses in Iowa, with this first state which on Monday 15 January – the results will arrive late at night here in Italy – will vote only for the Republican candidate.
There is certainly no shortage of controversy and tension, see Donald Trump's exclusion from the Republican primaries in Colorado and Maine on the basis of the 14th Amendment: anyone who has taken part in insurrections or revolts cannot assume public office, including the presidency.
The tycoon has now appealed and everything has been frozen until the Supreme Court gives its opinion.
In the GOP, in addition to Donald Trump, there are outsiders Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley, while the incumbent president Joe Biden will be in the field in the Democratic primaries seeking a second term.
Let's see in detail when the primaries for the 2024 US elections will take place, taking a look at the complete calendar, the rules, the polls and who the candidates are who aspire to become the next president of the United States.

The rules of the US primaries The primaries in the United States are a long process with several phases.
Before the start of voting, all attention had been paid to the various candidates, who must be over 35 years old and be American citizens to be able to be in the field.
A period of time called the "invisible primaries", which has now left room for voting where the voters of the Democratic Party will elect 4,750 delegates while for the Republicans the delegates will be 2,552.
In fact, in each State, the delegates due will be elected proportionally based on the votes received by each candidate, given that their number may vary based on the size of the State.
It will then be the delegates, together with the so-called super-delegates indicated directly by the party, who will nominate during the Convention who will be the candidate in the elections based on a majority that is established before the start of the primaries.
In theory, each delegate is called upon to express himself for the candidate for whom he was elected based on a principle of loyalty.
However, if at the end of the voting no candidate manages to obtain the established majority, a second vote will be held, there will be no constraints on the expression of one's preference.
The candidates There are currently several official candidates in the 2024 US primary elections both among the Democrats and the Republicans, with a clear prevalence for the GOP.
In the Democrats, there are three candidates who have made their presence official in the primaries.
Joe Biden Marianne Williamson Dean Phillips The line up of aspiring Republican presidential candidates is more crowded.
Donald Trump Ron DeSantis Nikki Haley Asa Hutchinson Vivek Ramaswamy Robert Francis Kennedy Jr initially expressed his desire to run in the Dem primaries but then chose to be present as an independent candidate like businessman Michael Wood.
The Libertarian Party will also be present in the presidential elections with its own candidate, while the Solidarity Party has already indicated Peter Sonsky as an aspiring occupant of the White House.
According to the polls, Joe Biden and Donald Trump are the big favorites in their respective primaries, but the former president will have to hope that other states do not decide to follow the example of Colorado and Maine even if the Supreme Court could ultimately agree with the tycoon .
The polls The polls regarding the primaries would seem to speak clearly.
Among Republicans, Donald Trump would have a clear advantage over Ron De Santis and Nikky Haley.
The Real Clear Politics polling average updated to January 15 is eloquent in this regard, with Trump having an almost 50 point lead.
Donald Trump 61.4% Nikki Haley 12.0% Ron DeSantis 10.7% Vivek Ramaswamy 4.3% Asa Hutchinson 0.7% Even among the Democrats there seems to be no match, with Joe Biden at 69.8% much ahead of to Marianne Williamson (7.9%) and Dean Phillips (3.2%).
At the moment everything would suggest a replay in 2024 of the challenge between Biden and Trump; in this regard, the polls see the tycoon favored with 45.8% against 44.7% for the president in office.
