It has been over a year since the baffling heist of 6,600 gold bars from an Air Canada warehouse at Toronto International Airport.
The pure gold shipment, valued at over 20 million Canadian dollars, originated from Switzerland.
Alongside the gold bars, 2.5 million Canadian dollars in cash also vanished.
The incident, involving nine individuals including an Air Canada employee, spanned across two nations and a valuables transport operation.
Weighing 400 kilograms, the 6,600 gold bars presented a logistical challenge to be swiftly removed from an airport warehouse without a trace, hinting at potential inside assistance.
Investigations initially suspected the treasure was repurposed for arms trafficking, with only a fraction of the stolen funds recovered within a year.
A mere 90,000 dollars in the form of bracelets and 430,000 Canadian dollars were seized, likely stemming from illicit gold sales.
Intriguingly, a peculiar turn of events unfolded during the probe, as six Toronto locals were scrutinized, leading to warrants for three suspects aged between 25 and 54.
Among these, one individual’s suspicious behavior triggered an arrest: arriving at the warehouse in a five-ton truck, presenting a fake air transport document, and overseeing the loading of the stolen gold bars and cash onto their vehicle.
The arrested parties included Air Canada staff, a jewelry store owner, and the truck driver, the latter facing additional charges for illegal firearm possession intended for resale within Canada.
