In a global society increasingly plagued by poverty, inequalities, and economic distress, the role of finance as a dominant force raises pressing questions about how politics determines which rights to defend.
This sentiment is echoed by Marco Rizzo, the Italian politician and coordinator of Democrazia Sovrana Popolare.
In a recent interview with Money.it, Rizzo emphasized that “civil rights have overshadowed social rights,” asserting that if he had to choose, social rights should take precedence.
This perspective highlights the urgent need to address foundational societal issues.
Rizzo believes that the disintegration of the traditional family unit, viewed as the bedrock of society, has contributed significantly to the rise in poverty.
He attributes this trend to political indifference toward key issues such as housing, employment, education, security, and healthcare.
Rather than addressing these critical areas, politicians appear increasingly preoccupied with civil rights, which he describes as mere “desires.”
Among the issues Rizzo points to are surrogacy, LGBTQ+ rights, and broader gender identity debates.
He argues that these topics, while important, should not distract from more pressing social matters.
Rizzo calls for a necessary debate on what he terms the “dictatorship of political correctness,” which often focuses on sexual and affective choices and environmental concerns.
He expresses nostalgia for a left that stood with workers at the gates, akin to Berlinguer’s legacy, instead of aligning with contemporary movements such as the Schlein-led Gay Pride parade.
Ultimately, Rizzo advocates prioritizing social rights over other concerns that, while valid, reflect personal preferences rather than fundamental needs.
