Traveling through Europe reveals a continent steeped in history and diverse traditions.
Each nation welcomes tourists in its unique way, with some showcasing a warm and friendly demeanor, while others may be less welcoming, leading to a stark contrast in experiences.
Italy, known for its rich heritage and culinary delights, can be classified as an inviting nation.
Yet, it often presents a dichotomy, with the South renowned for its hospitable and cheerful locals, while the North tends to be perceived as more reserved.
This division might explain Italy’s absence from the top 10 most friendly countries in Europe 2024—a surprising yet revealing statistic.
According to the annual Readers’ Choice Awards by Condé Nast Traveller, readers are asked to vote for the friendliest nation based on the warmth and hospitality of its people.
This year, Austria claimed the top spot, marking its first victory over last year’s champion, Ireland, which settled for second place in 2024.
Austria, famous for its stunning landscapes, including lakes and mountains, is a breathtaking destination.
The results, however, have raised eyebrows, as Vienna has been frequently labeled as one of the least friendly cities in Europe.
A previous survey, “Expat Insider” by Internations in 2023, even categorized Austria as unfriendly.
Nevertheless, perceptions can vary widely depending on individual experiences.
Following Austria are Croatia, Portugal, and Greece, while Iceland, Switzerland, Turkey, Spain, and France complete the list.
Interestingly, Austria enjoys positive ratings from travelers in the U.S.
and the U.K.
Moreover, Condé Nast Traveller conducted another survey to determine the most popular travel destinations in Europe.
Vienna emerged as the leading city among metropolitan areas with populations exceeding 2.5 million.
Globally, it ranked fifth, behind cities like Tokyo and Singapore, and in the U.K.
version, it secured third place, only behind Valencia and Stockholm.
Thus, Austria remains a favored choice for international travelers, earning high marks in various surveys.
