IT Wallet: Understanding How the Digital Wallet Works and Its Upcoming Launch

The Arrival of IT Wallet in Italy

Italy has officially launched its digital wallet, known as IT Wallet, which will be accessible on personal devices by October 2024.
Initially, around 50,000 Italians will have the opportunity to use it, but the rollout is expected to gradually include all citizens in the coming months.

This article delves into the key features and operational details of IT Wallet, aiming to clarify its function and significance as the full launch approaches.

What is IT Wallet?

IT Wallet is a secure and entirely digital wallet that consolidates essential documents, making them accessible directly from a smartphone.
Fueled by substantial funding—approximately 1.7 billion euros dedicated to digitalizing personal data and public administration—IT Wallet aligns Italy with the broader European project to establish a continental digital wallet by 2026.

This digital wallet not only aims to facilitate a shift from paper to electronic documentation but also aims to enhance communication with public services, ensuring easy access to personal documents typically found in a physical wallet.

Availability and Initial Documents

Set to launch on October 23, 2024, IT Wallet will initially be available to a limited user group who can actively test and utilize it.
A full public rollout is targeted for December 4, 2024.

Initially, users will be able to upload three essential documents: their driver’s license, health card (with tax code), and disability card.
This enables citizens to leave home without the physical copies, provided they have the wallet app handy on their devices.

How to Use IT Wallet

Designed to simplify daily life, IT Wallet provides secure access to vital documents and services.
While it builds upon the existing systems of SPID and CIE, it requires users to own a compatible smartphone and a stable internet connection.

Users must download the IO app, created in April 2020, which houses the IT Wallet feature.
After logging in via SPID or CIE, users can follow the prompts to manage their documents, enabling straightforward communication with public administration.

Future Developments

IT Wallet aims to eventually support a wide range of documents, from identification cards to various certifications.
Future phases include adding electoral IDs and passports, with provisions for professional licenses and educational credentials aiming for seamless integration into a singular digital platform.

Benefits of IT Wallet

This innovative tool aligns Italy with the European Digital Identity Wallet framework, set for 2026, offering enhanced security, rapid access to information, and reduced reliance on paper.
By simplifying bureaucratic procedures, IT Wallet supports a more sustainable and efficient administrative process.

Goals and Future Outlook

As IT Wallet becomes a fundamental aspect of daily life, it is poised to break down bureaucratic barriers and save time and resources.
With ambitious targets set under the PNRR, by 2025, 42.5 million citizens are expected to use IT Wallet, which will eventually integrate existing systems like SPID and CIE.

Looking ahead, by 2026, IT Wallet will extend its usability across Europe, further solidifying its role in the digital landscape.
