Many are asking this question now that the President of the Liguria Region, Giovanni Toti, has resigned following a corruption investigation conducted by the DDA of Genoa and the Financial Police.
His arrest led to him being placed under house arrest, which was lifted three months later.
Toti faces allegations of improper corruption and illicit financing, and reports suggest he has reached an agreement with the prosecution to serve two years and one month in prison, thereby avoiding a trial.
According to Ansa, “The sentence that Toti is agreeing to with the prosecution will be replaced with 1,500 hours of community service.” The agreement also includes a temporary prohibition from holding public office and incapacity to contract with public administrations for the duration of the sentence, in addition to the confiscation of €84,100.
Giovanni Toti was born on September 7, 1968, in Viareggio, Italy.
He later moved to Massa, where his father worked as a hotelier.
After graduating, he studied Political Science at Milan’s State University.
Toti’s career took off in 1996 when he joined Mediaset as an intern and quickly climbed the ranks, eventually becoming the director of Studio Aperto in 2010 and later, the Tg4.
He left Mediaset in 2014 when he became a political advisor to Silvio Berlusconi.
After his journalism career, in January 2014, Toti left his roles in Mediaset to become Berlusconi’s political advisor.
The political landscape was shifting, and Toti aimed to bolster Forza Italia’s presence amid Matteo Renzi’s emerging leadership.
Despite a disappointing performance in the European elections, Toti was elected as an MEP.
His political career advanced when he successfully ran for governor of Liguria in a traditionally left-leaning region, eventually forming the new party Cambiamo! which later merged into Noi Moderati.
Following his transition to politics, Toti was elected as an MEP in 2014.
His monthly earnings as an MEP ranged from €16,000 to €19,000.
As the governor of Liguria, he earned a gross monthly salary of €13,764.
His income reflects his status and includes an allowance and reimbursements.
In 2016, Toti reported an income of €102,481, and by 2020, this increased to €107,678.
