The End of American Deterrence: How Chaos is Unfolding On the Brink

The Decline of American Power: Geopolitical Chaos

The belief that the United States no longer holds the power it once did has become widespread, leading to generalized geopolitical chaos.
The Pax Americana, the unipolar order that emerged in the aftermath of the collapse of the USSR and the diaspora of thirteen nations that declared themselves autonomous and independent from the successor of the CSI, was based on deterrence.

The US was the world’s policeman, determined to enforce international law and order by any means necessary, including military intervention.
However, this role has gradually diminished, with significant consequences.
Crisis areas and armed conflicts have multiplied exponentially, from Ukraine to Israel, from the Red Sea to Georgia, from Armenia to sub-Saharan African countries where coups have occurred repeatedly.

In Europe, the Baltic countries express fear of a Russian invasion, and French President Emmanuel Macron states that deploying ground troops in Ukraine cannot be ruled out, although there is currently no consensus on this matter.

Escalation and Crisis Multiplication

The current discussion revolves around the possibility of using long-range weapons provided to Kiev by Western powers to target military objectives in Russia.
The battlefield is expanding, and new crisis hotspots continue to emerge.
As chaos spreads, the roots of this destabilization process must be examined, recalling the events that marked the end of the US’s ability to ensure global order through military intervention.

Beginning with the Arab Spring heavily supported by Vice President Hillary Clinton during Barack Obama’s first administration, a series of events led to the realization that the US could no longer maintain global order through deterrence or its vast military power deployed worldwide.

For instance, the decision not to intervene militarily against Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria after the use of chemical weapons in 2013 signaled a shift in US policy.
Subsequent events, such as the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in 2021, further highlighted America’s strategic weakness.

New Strategic Equilibria

The geopolitical landscape is evolving, with the weakening of traditional spheres of influence under American unipolarism.
The need for new equilibria and a multipolar order is evident, yet the US seems reluctant to relinquish its role.
As geopolitical tensions rise and crises amplify, the prospect of a more tumultuous and violent future looms.

The economic globalization that eroded traditional spheres of influence now demands new geopolitical balances.
The chaos that ensues will test the global order, highlighting the changing dynamics of power on the world stage.
