Who Will Win the Umbria Regional Elections 2024?

The countdown to the Umbria regional elections is on, with polling days set for November 17 and 18, yet concrete polling data remains sparse.

The electoral landscape is becoming clearer.
The incumbent president from the center-right, Donatella Tesei, aims for a second term, bolstered by support from Alternativa Popolare, a party led by Stefano Bandecchi, the current mayor of Terni.

On the opposing side, the center-left coalition has rallied around Stefania Proietti, the mayor of Assisi.
This broad alliance includes notable groups such as the Democratic Party, the Five Star Movement, Azione, Alleanza Verdi-Sinistra, and Italia Viva.
Their strategy reflects a “wide field” alliance, currently a hot topic in national discussions.

Furthermore, two familiar political figures are entering the fray: Roberto Fiore from Forza Nuova and Marco Rizzo from Democrazia Sovrana Popolare, previously associated with the Communist Party.
The Potere al Popolo left-wing group has nominated Martina Leonardi, while former League member Francesco Miroballo represents Umbria Autonoma.
Additional candidates include independents Moreno Pasquinelli and Elia Fiorini.

This election features a fundamentally bipolar competition, coupled with several outsiders capable of siphoning votes from both coalitions.

The Polling Landscape for Umbria 2024 Elections

Historically regarded as a bastion of the left, Umbria was once a stronghold for the Communist Party and various center-left coalitions that dominated the region for decades.
The significant electoral shift in 2019 saw the center-right, led by Donatella Tesei, capturing the presidency with 57% of the vote amidst a fractured Democratic Party.

In response to the political landscape, the Democratic Party has strengthened their ranks, creating a solid coalition in support of Stefania Proietti, the independent mayor representing the center-left.

The first election poll for Umbria 2024 was conducted in April by Quorum, prior to official candidate announcements, yielding the following results: Donatella Tesei – 51.8%, center-left candidate – 44.9%, another candidate – 3.3%, undecided and abstaining – 32.6%.
Despite Tesei’s provisional lead, these results came before the center-left reassumed control of Perugia, and the center-right recently lost Terni’s leadership.

Overall, as we await further polling, the Umbria elections appear to be wide open, with Tesei and Proietti likely to engage in a tight contest.
