The city of Sassari is gearing up for the upcoming municipal elections in 2024, set to coincide with the European elections for an election day event in Sardinia.
The current civic mayor, Nanni Campus, who won the 2019 elections, has announced that he will not run for re-election.
Instead, the current majority will support the candidacy of councilor Nicola Lucchi.
Mariano Brianda, former center-left candidate, will once again enter the race, this time under the banner of the “Costituente per Sassari” party.
On the other side, the center-right coalition will be represented by Gavino Mariotti.
The other candidates include Giuseppe Mascia, supported by the PD, left-wing parties, and the 5 Star Movement, and Giuseppe Palopoli for “Sassari Svegliati.”
The municipal elections in Sassari 2024 will take place on Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, coinciding with the European elections and regional elections in Piedmont.
Polling stations will be open from 15:00 to 23:00 on Saturday and from 7:00 to 23:00 on Sunday.
Vote counting for the first round will begin on Monday, June 10, at 14:00.
For the mayoral and city council elections, voters in Sassari have three voting options: mark an X on the party symbol to vote for both the party and mayoral candidate, mark an X only on the mayoral candidate’s name, or mark an X on the party and write the name of the preferred councilor candidate.
Split voting is allowed, where voters can choose the mayor from one party and the councilor from another.
The electoral law in Sassari follows a majoritarian system for mayoral elections while councilors are elected proportionally.
In case no candidate wins an absolute majority in the first round, a runoff will take place between the top two candidates.
The winning party will be allocated 60% of the council seats, with the remaining seats distributed proportionally amongst other parties using the D’Hondt method.
A total of 34 councilors, excluding the mayor, will be elected.
All lists exceeding 3% of the votes will be eligible for seats.
