Deductions on Medical Expenses 2024: When are Receipts Not Required to be Kept?

Understanding Medical Expense Deductions for the 2024 Tax Season

As the 2024 tax season kicks off, it’s essential to know which medical expense deductions you are entitled to and when you should keep your purchase receipts.
The pre-filled 730 form has been available since April 30th, with the new addition this year of the pre-filled Redditi model.
However, any modifications and submissions can only be made starting from May 20th.

When filing your tax return through a Caf or an authorized professional, you must provide evidence of purchase for the expenses you are claiming.
In some cases, though, receipts for medical expenses do not need to be kept if they match the pre-filled model prepared by the Revenue Agency.

Options for Filing Your Tax Return in 2024

In 2024, taxpayers have several options for submitting their tax returns:

  • Intervene on the data and independently submit the pre-filled model;
  • Seek assistance from the employer;
  • Get help from a Caf;
  • Employ a professional accountant.

Tax returns for 2024 will concern incomes received during 2023.
Over the past few years, there has been a rise in taxpayers submitting models independently, although this trend seems to have slowed down recently.
On the other hand, the percentage of pre-filled declarations submitted without any modifications has increased, thanks to the growing amount of pre-filled information provided by the Agency over the years.

Who Doesn’t Need to Keep Receipts for Medical Expenses?

Despite the increasing accuracy of the pre-filled models, most taxpayers still prefer turning to a Caf or an authorized intermediary.
However, many choose to submit independently.
In both cases, if the pre-filled 730 form (or the Redditi model) is submitted without changes, it’s no longer necessary to keep receipts for medical expenses for 5 years.

Formal checks are waived in the case of unmodified submissions, though checks to verify eligibility for deductions remain in place.
The key factor remains the modification of the pre-filled declaration.
Without alterations, formal checks are not carried out since the Tax Office will accept data provided by third parties.
But for now, this simplification applies to everyone.

If there are modifications to the pre-filled declaration, formal checks may be conducted.
However, any medical expenses not altered or added to the pre-filled declaration are exempt from this type of verification.
The receipts that need to be kept are only those related to medical expenses that have been modified; unaltered expenses do not require proof of purchase.
