A recently published list of the most dangerous countries to travel to in 2024 reveals some surprising destinations.
HelloSafe.ca, a website specializing in insurance and personal finance, has compiled a list of the 100 safest and least safe countries in the world to vacation in, analyzing 35 specific criteria.
These criteria fall into categories such as the likelihood of natural disasters, societal violence, involvement in armed conflicts, healthcare infrastructure, and militarization of the country.
War-torn countries or those facing internal crises are, not surprisingly, among the least safe countries in the world today.
This includes Yemen, Somalia, Iran, and Russia.
However, the list of the most dangerous countries to vacation in also includes other destinations popular with Italian and global tourists.
For instance, Mexico ranks 3rd in the list of most dangerous destinations, while the United States ranks 14th, nestled between Syria and Bangladesh.
Colombia, which has seen a resurgence in tourism in recent years, and Indonesia, particularly famous for Bali, are also on the list.
It’s important to note that this index does not measure the specific safety of tourists but rather the overall safety of a country.
Traveling to the Philippines poses risks due to armed conflicts and terrorist activities, particularly in the Mindanao region, where militant groups like Abu Sayyaf operate, known for terrorist attacks and kidnappings.
Armed conflicts between government forces and rebel groups can also pose a serious danger to travelers, making some areas unstable and unsafe.
Cities like Manila and Cebu experience high rates of theft, robberies, and muggings.
Even rural and suburban areas can be dangerous due to high levels of criminal activity.
The Philippines is frequently hit by natural disasters, with typhoons causing severe floods and infrastructure damage, disrupting travel and endangering residents and tourists.
In certain areas of Colombia, crime is a significant issue.
Cities like Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali have high rates of theft, robberies, and muggings, especially in tourist areas and crowded places.
The presence of armed groups and activities related to drug trafficking, particularly in rural and border regions, increases the country’s level of danger.
Colombia, located in a seismically active zone, is prone to floods and landslides during the rainy season, which can hinder transportation and damage infrastructure.
Mexico ranks third in the list of the most dangerous countries to vacation in.
It faces risks related to crime, especially in major cities and border areas, with thefts, robberies, and kidnappings.
Some regions are influenced by drug cartel violence.
Natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes also pose a threat.
Other countries in the ranking include India, Russia, Yemen, Indonesia, Somalia, Mozambique, Pakistan, Venezuela, Iran, Syria, the United States, and Bangladesh.
