Letizia Ruggeri’s Hearing on July 24: Release Date and Consequences

Letizia Ruggeri Hearing on July 24: a Decisive Day

Today marks a crucial day not only for the investigations concerning the prosecutor in the trial of Yara Gambirasio’s murder, the thirteen-year-old girl from Brembate di Sopra found dead in February 2011 after disappearing three months earlier, but also for Massimo Bossetti’s hopes of having his requests granted, which have been consistently rejected in recent years.

As it is known, Massimo Bossetti – whose DNA was found to be 99.99999987% compatible with that of “Unknown 1” discovered on the girl’s underwear – was found guilty of Yara Gambirasio’s murder following a sexual assault.
Currently, he is serving his life sentence at the Bollate prison in Milan, a sentence that has been confirmed at various levels of judgment.

Letizia Ruggeri was the public prosecutor in the trial against Massimo Bossetti.
In 2022, the former worker accused the prosecutor of wanting to transfer 54 test tubes containing biological traces of Yara and the man from the San Raffaele hospital in Milan to the evidence room of the Bergamo court.
Bossetti’s lawyers argue that this transfer would have compromised the preservation of evidence, as it would have interrupted the necessary cold chain to keep the DNA samples intact, making further analyses impossible.

For this reason, Letizia Ruggeri is under investigation for procedural fraud and obstruction of justice.
The Venice Prosecutor’s Office has requested the case to be dropped for the prosecutor, but Bossetti’s defense has opposed this decision.
Now, it will be up to the judge to decide, with the hearing scheduled for today, Wednesday, July 24.

The Yara Gambirasio Case

The Yara Gambirasio case was one that first shocked Italy and then divided public opinion, still split today between those who believe in Bossetti’s guilt and those who support his innocence.
It is, therefore, not surprising that there is a great deal of attention – especially after the release of the Netflix docuseries – on the hearing taking place today in Venice regarding the request to drop the investigation on Letizia Ruggeri, the prosecutor who secured Massimo Bossetti’s conviction.

The outcome is expected today, with the judge possibly bringing an end to the investigation concerning Letizia Ruggeri, who is accused of procedural fraud and obstruction of justice.
If the request to drop the case against Ruggeri is rejected, Bossetti’s defense team could hope to reopen the case regarding their client.

“In May, the defense, with the approval of the Supreme Court, was able to examine the 54 samples, discovering 23 more with dilutions of the same DNA,” as reported by Il Giorno.
Despite believing that these biological traces were altered, Bossetti’s legal team wants to analyze them to “have mathematical certainty that it is so.”

If the request to drop the investigation against Ruggeri is dismissed, Bossetti’s lawyers may hope for a new opportunity to analyze the remaining evidence.
Only in this way could the former worker expect a review of the trial.

Regarding a new opportunity, Claudio Salvagni, Bossetti’s lawyer, recently stated to Il Giornale that “we are focused on the investigation in Venice concerning Letizia Ruggeri at the moment, then we will see.”

Although it is not the sole evidence that led to Bossetti’s conviction, according to lawyer Salvagni, “this trial is based on DNA evidence; if the DNA evidence is compromised, the entire case that has been built collapses.” All that remains is to await the verdict expected today, July 24, to understand if there could ever be a new chapter in the trial regarding the young Yara’s murder.
