A significant protest by teachers will take place across Italy on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Following previous demonstrations by the eligible candidates of the 2020 school competition and support teachers on August 30 and September 4, precarious teachers from all over Italy are organizing another mobilization.
This effort is backed by various labor unions as the new school year approaches.
As the return to classrooms looms, discussions about job insecurity, vacant positions, and missed hiring opportunities resurface.
This year, demands from teachers gain urgency due to changes implemented by Minister Valditara regarding the recruitment of educators.
The protests on September 27, primarily concern those qualified in the ongoing Pnrr 2023 competition.
Many candidates still lack a ranking, as regional education offices have only published the list of winners, leaving numerous qualified individuals uncertain about their standing.
The mobilization has been gaining momentum, with an impressive 12,000 signatures collected within two days on a letter sent to unions and parliamentary groups.
Various demonstrations are set to occur in strategic locations across the country, specifically at 4 PM in front of the regional education offices of five cities: Rome, Naples, Milan, Florence, and Bari.
As this is a peaceful mobilization rather than a strike, regular classes will continue with minimal disruption for students.
The demands of the protesting teachers are clear.
They seek inclusion in the Pnrr 2023/2024 competition and the publication of transparent rankings.
Many, like teacher Luigi Maria Sofia, who scored high in assessments, feel their achievements are overlooked.
Moreover, concerns arise about the quotas established for applicants with prior civic service, which may hinder fairness in the selection process due to age restrictions.
The Flc Cgil union supports these protests and has proposed amendments in Parliament, emphasizing the need for transparent recruitment practices.
In a statement, Cisl Scuola’s Secretary General Ivana Barbacci highlighted the consequences of inadequate hiring permissions, which result in many qualified teachers remaining in precarious positions, forcing them to repeatedly undertake the same competition.
Barbacci argues that this approach wastes resources and unfairly strains educators.
The Cisl Scuola advocates for a dual-channel system for recruitment, ensuring that teachers have the opportunity to leverage both competition results and their work experience.
