Until what age can you drive

To drive it is necessary to possess certain psychophysical requirements which determine the possibility of driving the vehicle safely.
Advancing age can significantly reduce your ability to drive, often because it leads to reduced vision and reflexes.
For this reason the law provides that as age increases the mandatory renewals become increasingly closer.
Unfitness to drive leads to the revocation of the license, which however can occur at any time in a driver's life.
In fact, age alone is not a suitable criterion for evaluating driving skills, which depend on the overall state of the individual.
It is therefore not possible to establish unambiguously up to what age it is possible to drive, except with some exceptions.
Here are the rules for the various types of driving licence.
Until what age can you drive License A License B License C License D Professional drivers Nautical license Special licenses Pilot's license A license Type A licenses (AM, A1, A2 and A) for driving motorcycles must be renewed: Every 10 years until the age of 50; every 5 years from 50 to 70 years; every 3 years from 70 to 80 years; every 2 years after reaching the age of 80.
This means that as long as the driver meets the eligibility requirements he can drive, regardless of his age.
B driving license Type B driving licenses (B1, B and BE) follow the same renewal mechanism provided for A driving licences, therefore they must be renewed: Every 10 years until the age of 50; every 5 years from 50 to 70 years; every 3 years from 70 to 80 years; every 2 years after reaching the age of 80.
Consequently, it is possible to drive cars and motorbikes without age limits, at least as long as the driver is fully capable of doing so according to medical parameters.
C driving license For C driving licenses (C1, C1E, C and CE) there are more stringent rules, in fact they must be renewed: Every 5 years until the age of 65; every 2 years after reaching the age of 65.
Article 115 of the Highway Code then provides that one cannot exceed the age of 65 to drive road trains and articulated vehicles whose total mass when fully loaded is greater than 20 tonnes.
The limit can be raised up to 68 years with annual renewals.
D driving license D driving licenses (D1, D1E, D and DE) also have more severe limitations, in fact they must be renewed: Every 5 years until the age of 70; every 3 years after reaching the age of 70.
Also in this case, article 115 of the Highway Code places specific limitations, establishing that some vehicles can only be driven up to the age of 60, with the possibility of raising the limit to 68 years with annual checks.
Reference is made to the following vehicles used for the transport of people: Buses: trucks; trucks; articulated vehicles; articulated cars.
In addition to these exceptions, after the age of 60, D and D1 licenses entitle you to drive vehicles for which B and BE licenses are required respectively, in fact the driver can request reclassification.
Professional drivers The license renewal mechanisms are however independent of the specific requirements required of professional drivers.
For example, the Certificate of Professional Qualification (CAP) necessary for professional driving must be renewed every 5 years, but after reaching the age of 65 the medical commission for renewal can impose a different duration.
The Driver Qualification Card (Cqc) for the transport of people follows the D license and therefore cannot be renewed beyond the age of 65 (or 68 if the annual renewals are exceeded).
The Cqc for the transport of goods, however, has no age limit (as long as it depends only on the B license) and can also be renewed for those over 80 who meet the requirements.
Nautical license The nautical license is valid for 10 years from its issue or confirmation of validity until the age of 60.
Beyond this threshold, renewal must take place every 5 years.
The C nautical license, which qualifies people with physical disabilities to nautical management, must however always be renewed every 5 years.
European Union law, however, imposes a limit of 65 years for pilots in the commercial air transport of passengers, vehicles or mail.
Special licenses Special licenses enable physically impaired or disabled drivers to drive suitable vehicles for the AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, C1, C, D1 and D licences, including the E extension.
Special licenses have a validity of 5 years, but the term can be shortened by the medical commission for any ongoing pathologies.
In addition to this, special licenses follow the criteria established for the corresponding ordinary license.
Pilot License Pilot licenses, commonly called flight licenses, are divided into different categories, each of which is subject to different specific criteria.
For example, for the private pilot license (PPL): renewal every 5 years until the age of 40; renewal every 2 years between 40 and 50 years; annual renewal after age 50.
Pilots must however follow the specific provisions that depend on the type of license held and its use, also respecting the obligations regarding courses and flight hours or co-pilots.
