Giorgio Cantarini, the child actor who stole hearts in the iconic Italian film “Life is Beautiful,” has come a long way since his debut at the tender age of 5.
Today, at 32, he resides in the United States, where he continues to pursue his passion for acting.
Giorgio’s journey into the world of acting began unexpectedly.
It was during high school that he decided to explore his talents further and enrolled in the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, a highly selective institution that admits only 15 students per year.
His acceptance marked the beginning of a dedicated and rigorous training regime that would shape his future as an actor.
After moving to New York in 2019 to pursue his acting career in both film and theatre, Giorgio faced a setback due to the Covid-19 pandemic, prompting his return to Italy.
During this time, he volunteered with the Protezione Civile in Montefiascone, his hometown, where he was involved in assisting with contact tracing efforts—a rewarding experience that left a lasting impact on him.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Giorgio bounced back to his acting pursuits upon returning to New York.
He resumed his role as the lead actor in the play “Lions Don’t Hug” by Stella Saccà and also took on the part of actor and narrator in “A.P.
Giannini – Bank to the Future,” a production detailing the story of Amedeo Peter Giannini, the founder of the Bank of America.
Italian audiences recently had the pleasure of seeing Giorgio in the film “Comandante” alongside Pierfrancesco Favino, where he portrayed the character of Vezio Schiassi, a real-life member of the crew.
Reflecting on his humble beginnings, Giorgio recalls how his parents took him to the auditions for “Life is Beautiful” on a whim, not expecting much.
His unique physical traits aligned perfectly with what Roberto Benigni was seeking in a child actor, leading to his casting.
Despite his young age, Giorgio’s innate charm and intelligence shone through.
While Giorgio’s memories of the audition process are faint, the impact of the film remains vivid in his mind.
The final scene, in particular, never fails to stir his emotions, serving as a poignant reminder of the profound significance of his part in the cinematic masterpiece.
Giorgio maintains a close bond with Roberto Benigni, often seeking his advice and cherishing their enduring friendship.
Their connection transcends time and distance, a testament to the lasting impact of their collaboration on “Life is Beautiful.”
Giorgio Cantarini’s remarkable journey from a child actor in an Oscar-winning film to a seasoned performer in Hollywood exemplifies the enduring power of storytelling and the transformative nature of cinema.
