Mandatory Winter Tires: The 2024/2025 Regulations

As we approach the winter season of 2024/2025, Italy reaffirms the requirement for vehicles to be equipped with winter tires or to carry snow chains.
This regulation, established to enhance road safety during winter months, addresses the challenges posed by wet, icy, or snow-covered roads that significantly reduce tire grip.

Modern winter tires, especially those marked with the snowflake symbol, provide enhanced traction, acceleration, and braking performance, making them superior in winter conditions while still performing adequately on dry pavement.

Legal Period for Winter Tires

According to a law enacted in 2014, the mandatory use of winter tires in Italy spans from November 15 to April 15.
This year, the same rule applies, allowing for a grace period of one month before and after this timeframe for tire switching.
Notably, this waiver pertains only to winter tires for vehicles classified as M1 (passenger cars), N1 (light trucks) and O1 (trailers up to 0.75 tons) from October 15 to May 15.

Consequences of Non-compliance

Failing to adhere to winter tire regulations can result in fines ranging significantly based on the infraction, as well as a deduction of three points from the driver’s license.
The highest penalties are reserved for individuals who fail to remove winter tires during the summer, with fines between €422 and €1,682.
Those ignoring the winter tire mandate face fines from €41 to €169 in urban areas, €85 to €338 in rural regions, and €80 to €318 on highways.

Winter Equipment: Beyond Just Tires

It’s essential to consider winter preparations comprehensively.
The law recognizes winter tires and standard tires equipped with chains as equivalent options.
Additionally, snow socks are included in this categorization, offering vehicles an alternative means of support in winter conditions.
All-season tires marked with M+S are also permitted when official advisories are in effect.

Regions Where Winter Tires are Mandatory

Each year, Anas publishes a decree specifying the regions and roads in Italy where winter tires or snow chains must be utilized.
The list includes various major roads and highways statewide.
For example, regions like Abruzzo and Calabria require winter equipment on all state roads and exposed routes, while areas such as Trentino have similar mandates across their highways.

Remember to stay updated on specific regulations in your area to ensure safety and compliance throughout the winter months.
