Ryanair Revamps Hand Luggage Policies, Sparking Passenger Discontent

Ryanair Updates Hand Luggage Rules

Ryanair has recently announced yet another alteration in its hand luggage policy, a change that has left passengers feeling frustrated.
According to reports from various media outlets, the airline has justified this decision as a necessary adjustment to align its costs with the fees charged for luggage boarding at the gate.
Consequently, passengers opting for priority boarding after making a reservation will now incur higher charges.

The budget airline is frequently criticized for its myriad of additional fees, which can rapidly inflate the overall cost of a trip that was initially booked at a competitive price.
This has led to outcries on social media from irritated British travelers who are unhappy with the price increases and the array of supplementary costs that have been implemented.

Changes in Additional Luggage Fees

In accordance with Ryanair’s policies, adjustments have been made regarding the costs associated with changes to baggage made after booking.
The intention here is to encourage travelers to utilize online check-in, streamlining the boarding process and potentially reducing the workforce required at airports, thereby lowering ticket prices in the long run.

Extra luggage charges will remain the same for those who add them during initial booking.
However, if added later, these charges will be significantly higher.
Let’s explore the specifics of these new regulations.

Understanding Ryanair’s Luggage Policy

For those unfamiliar, a Ryanair ticket includes a free hand luggage allowance with maximum dimensions of 40x20x25 cm.
Although each airline has its own baggage guidelines, it’s crucial to verify these before arriving at the airport.
The permitted size for an additional hand luggage is 55x40x20 cm and weighs up to 10 kg, with priority boarding costs fluctuating between €6 and €36 (or equivalent in pounds), depending on the flight route and selected dates.

However, if priority boarding is requested after the initial booking or at the airport, the fee increases considerably.
Previously ranging from €20 to €38, the new rates can soar up to €60, depending on the circumstances.

Summary of Updated Baggage Fees

According to statements from Ryanair’s representatives, these adjustments are essential to match the gate fee charges.
Below is a summary of revised baggage fees, with VAT applicable in local jurisdictions:

Baggage Type Cost at Booking Cost After Booking
Small Bag €0 €0
Priority Boarding with 2nd Hand Bag €6 to €36 €20 to €60
10 kg Check-in Bag €11.99 to €29.99 €23.99 to €40
20 kg Check-in Bag €18.99 to €59.99 €44 to €59.99
Excess Baggage €12 per kg
Special Value Luggage €50

In general, any services added post-booking will incur a higher fee.
This includes the simple act of obtaining a boarding pass at the airport, which can cost as much as €20.
Similarly, checking in at the airport can run up to €55.
Moreover, transporting sports equipment or musical instruments can attract additional charges if not arranged during the initial booking.
For example, bringing along a bicycle may cost €75 instead of €60, reflecting the new changes.
