Civil Service in Agriculture: A New Opportunity for Youth

The agricultural civil service has become a reality, allowing universal civil service entities to propose projects in agriculture and rural areas.
Young individuals eager to participate can now engage in civil service activities within the agricultural sector, with 1000 positions available.

This initiative is part of the three-year plan for 2023-2025 and is open to youth aged 18 to 28 who wish to dedicate a year to civil and social engagement.
Participants can contribute positively to society and support the non-violent defense of their homeland, while also promoting social, cultural, and economic development within the country.

To access these projects, interested candidates can apply through the public announcements issued by the Department for Youth Policies and the Universal Civil Service.

How the Agricultural Civil Service Works

The civil service in agriculture offers a fresh opportunity for 1000 young individuals.
Participants will receive a monthly allowance of €507.30 as they commit to social service work.

The announcement was made by Minister Lollobrigida at the G7 Youth summit, highlighting the establishment of a dedicated framework for agricultural civil service.
The initiative aims to allow youth to engage directly in agricultural activities.

The project will be overseen by the Ministry of Youth Policies, which has allocated the necessary resources.
The announcement for this civil service was released on October 2, and applications will be accepted until November 28, 2024.
Entities registered with the Universal Civil Service Registry can submit specific programs for approximately 1000 volunteer operators during this trial phase.

The announcement emphasizes that the SCU system is continually striving to make civil service experiences more relevant and aligned with the interests of young people.

Aims of the Agricultural Civil Service

The primary aim of this program is to equip participants with “cross-cutting skills in agriculture and agri-food” to enhance employability within this vital sector.
Additionally, it seeks to promote technological innovation and to enrich knowledge of traditional farming practices.

The objectives outlined in the announcement include:

• Eradication of all forms of poverty globally;
• Achieving food security, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture;
• Ensuring health and well-being for all ages;
• Encouraging sustainable production and consumption patterns to reduce food waste;
• Promoting actions to combat climate change;
• Sustainable management of terrestrial ecosystems, including combating desertification and preserving biodiversity.

It’s important to note that biodiversity protection, climate change mitigation, and the promotion of sustainable agriculture are central to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

All entities listed in the Universal Civil Service Registry are entitled to participate in the “Agricultural Civil Service” framework.
Each participating entity may submit one or more intervention programs in response to the specific announcement from the Department.
Each project is required to involve a minimum of 4 operators, with submissions needed by November 28, 2024.

Participating entities may propose projects that offer support and therapeutic activities, educational services targeting children, promotion of agricultural products, and advocacy for healthy eating habits to combat eating disorders.
