Among the key players in the upcoming elections are current mayor Edoardo Gaffeo, who will be supported by the 5 Star Movement, while the Democratic Party has put forward Palmiro Franco Tosin as their candidate.
On the center-right, Valeria Cittadin will represent the coalition, supported by Azione, alongside candidates Antonio Rossini, Ezio Conchi, and Federico Frigato.
Election Date and Logistics
The municipal elections in Rovigo, including the first round, are scheduled to take place alongside the European elections on Saturday, June 8th, and Sunday, June 9th, 2024.
The voting hours will be from 3 PM to 11 PM on Saturday, and from 7 AM to 11 PM on Sunday.
The subsequent potential runoff election is planned for June 23rd and 24th.
Electoral Law
The electoral law for municipal elections in Italy follows a majority system for the election of the mayor, with proportional distribution of councilors.
If no candidate secures an absolute majority in the first round, a runoff between the top two candidates will take place.
In the case of a tie, the older candidate will be elected mayor.
To ensure a stable majority and governability, the winning mayoral candidate’s list will be allocated 60% of the seats in the Council, while the remaining seats will be distributed proportionally among other lists using the D’Hondt method.
A total of 32 councilors, excluding the mayor, will be elected, with all lists surpassing a 3% threshold of valid votes eligible for seats.
In larger municipalities, voters have the option of split voting, endorsing up to two preferred candidates while maintaining gender parity.
